Mitch Altman: hacking, rethink technology in collaboration

February 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) is an interdisciplinary course for students and a series of lectures and activities open to all. The third edition of Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) explores scopes and impact of new technologies.

On Tuesday 13th of February 2018 Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) invites Mitch Altman for his lecture <Hacking: rethink technologies in collaboration>.

Over the past decade, thousands of programmers, designers and engineers have gathered at hackers spaces, co-labs, and makerspaces to rethink and recreate technologies in collaboration. They share beliefs about what technologies should be designed to do, discussing how information should be shared, and how to design the worlds we want.

Mitch Altman is a hacker and inventor, known for inventing TV-B-Gone, a keychain that turns off TVs in public places. He co-founded a successful Silicon Valley startup and did pioneering work in Virtual Reality. He is an author and teacher, and goes around the world giving talks and workshops. Mitch promotes hackerspaces, open source hardware, and mentors others wherever he goes. He is a co-founder of Noisebridge hackerspace in San Francisco, and is President and CEO of Cornfield Electronics. Mitch Altman’s talk will cover a range of topics, drawing from personal experiences: traveling around the world helping communities setting up hackerspaces, promoting open hardware, giving workshops about soldering and electronics to people of all ages, how to find projects that lead to worthwhile startups, the need to transform education to be more worthwhile, sustainable economies, responsibility, the pluses and minuses of technology, and the possibility of making a living in meaningful ways.

This event takes place at RecyK (Fernand Demetskaai 55, 1070 Brussel) from 6PM to 8PM.

The lecture will be in English. Entrance is free.

The lecture will be followed by a workshop in the fablab of RecyK. Click here for more info and to register for the workshop (20:00-21:30).
