Eco-management in the hospital sector: meet Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc
“Our aim is to take care of our patients, and this also means taking care of the environment.” How can an environmental approach be introduced into a hospital? This is the question we put to Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels, the first organisation to be awarded the Ecodyn label in the healthcare sector.
After assessing its activities’ carbon footprint in 2018, Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc decided to step into eco-management. As one of the largest hospitals in Belgium and employing more than 6,000 people in the Brussels-Capital Region, the hospital realised not only the impact its activities had on the environment, but also that steps could be taken to limit this impact.
The main areas Saint-Luc has focused on are recycling, energy management and mobility. As waste management is so important within the healthcare sector, the hospital has developed a fully fledged recycling centre to deal with this issue in-house.
To expand its eco-management approach, the hospital made good use of the tools provided by Ecodyn. The label offers a catalogue of good practices, categorised by theme. According to Benoît Darras, who is responsible for Saint-Luc’s label, “This allows different clinics to compare what they are doing and pick up a range of new ideas to implement over time”.
The label also promotes the visibility of the organisation’s actions and its commitment to sustainability, which can be an advantage when recruiting, particularly for specialisms in short supply.
The hospital wants to lead by example and kick-start a movement within the sector. “At Saint-Luc we are incredibly proud to be the first hospital in Brussels to hold the Ecodynamic Organisation label. We hope that others will follow and that we can set a shining example”.
Saint-Luc plans to continue its eco-management approach in the future and work towards achieving a second star within the Ecodyn rating system.
Would you like to implement an eco-management approach within your organisation? Here’s a tip from Saint-Luc to help get you started: make sure to assign a specific person to coordinate the various environmental management efforts and centralise data.
