Intellectual property

Intellectual Property is a collection of legal rights that provide control over the availability and use of skills, creativity, resources and technology and gives the owner or his licensee a competitive advantage. To the contrary of what is generally believed, IP is not limited to patent applications. There are many other IP rights, protecting different types of creations.

Since IP can be one of the sources of your competitive advantage, it should not be overlooked. It is essential to protect your IP, but also to optimize the exploitation of these rights by others.  However, the process of protecting your IP right is time and resource consuming. Therefore, lifetech.brussels can support you trough this process. We can :

NCP - National Contact Point Brussels
Brussels National Contact Point (NCP Brussels) is a regional initiative whose aim is to help companies, universities, research centres and other stakeholders of the Brussels Capital Region to access EU funding for Research and Innovation.
NCP Brussels team can assist and advise you before the project submission, during the project implementation and for the exploitation of the project's results.

REGIONAL SUBSIDIES AND FINANCING POSSIBILITIES

Export incentives
The Brussels-Capital Region has 5 export incentives available covering the main aspects of seeking out international opportunities:

  • Promotion aimed at foreign markets
  • Canvassing abroad
  • International trade fairs
  • Responding to calls for tender
  • Setting up representative offices outside of the European Union.

Other useful subsidies

  • Taking a training course in foreign trade
  • Support of a consultant specialising in international trade (feasibility study of your export project or for market research)
  • Recruit a FTP for the promotion and the development of your activities outside the European Union

Investments

Exportbru, a subsidiary of the Brussels Regional Investment Agency, can help you to deal with the financial requirements generated by your export business.

Localisation/Permit

Starting your project in the health sector, you might need office space, lab space or even an address to register your head office. Different solution exist in Brussels, all targeting different types of needs.

Incubation facilities

  • Brussels Life Science Incubator (BLSI), located on the UCL campus (Alma) and provides specific accommodation for start-ups: offices, laboratories, logistic facilities,etc.
  • EEBIC (Erasmus European Business & Innovation Centre), located on the ULB campus (Erasmus) offers more than 6.000 m² of premises, from offices to equipped laboratories, and a comprehensive administrative infrastructure which enables start-ups and spin-offs to grow up. The EEBIC team provides managerial advices, from the preparation of a business plan to intellectual property protection, in order to support pioneering projects development.
  • Galactic Innovation Campus offers state-of-the-art bio-tech facilities and expertise.
    Galactic conducts R&D, piloting and small-scale production on site which creates the right environment for knowledge sharing. Most of the research programmes are done in collaboration with partners from academia and industry. Galactic also offers training and consulting services based on our 20 year know-how. The Campus  welcomes students from around the world to experiment and direct the development of new solutions of tomorrow.(pdf)

Brussels has a network of 8 Business Centers aiming to support and accompany entrepreneurs by providing :

  • accommodation at competitive prices ( with reception infrastructure)
  • experts in management and business creation
  • a wide range of services dedicated to entrepreneurs.

Spaces for businesses

Citydev.brussels' focuses mainly on reception facilities for companies including industrial parks, science parks, centers for SMEs and buildings for businesses.

Urban planning and environment permit

impulse.brussels analyzes your needs and determines the type of permit to request. We will clarify with you the procedure and the elements necessary to complete the permit application forms. We will also make recommendations to optimize the project and clarify administrative decisions on the subject. For any question, send us an email.

Funding

Different sources of funding to develop your lifetech project are available in the Brussels Capital Region. The first step is to identify what you need to finance. The source of funding to finance a new office may not be the same as the type of financing required to finance an Research & Development project.  In parallel, you should also try to well estimate your financing needs. We strongly advise you to make a complete financial plan based on sound assumptions.

Business and Financial planning

Developing a business and a financial plan are essentials steps in the creation of your projects. It will help you negotiating with external financiers, bankers, venture capitalists or with the administration. Therefore, it is important that these phase is not to be treated as one of the many administrative steps. A business plan typically includes detailed information about the organization or team attempting to reach the goals. A financial plan contents all relevant financial information about your project.

These documents are not static and they evolve along with your project. Therefore, it is very important to update them every time a decision is made that might impact the organization of your project.
